Venice is a city full of lions, especially winged lions. The winged lion is even the mascot of the city, the result of a Ninth Century legend about the stealing the remains of the apostle St. Mark from his tomb in Alexandria by Venetian tradesmen. On the way to Venice their ship encountered a heavy storm, but St. Mark appeared to the captain and warned him to strike his sails, otherwise the ship would be wrecked on rocks.

After arrival in Venice the apostle's remains were handed over to the Doge and soon the apostle's symbol - a winged lion - was chosen as the logo of the Venetian Republic. One of the most beautiful winged lions in Venice can be found at Porta della Carta of the Doge's Palace, next to the Basilica San Marco.
